After almost four years in our house, and many, many procrastinations, we decided to get the remainder of our basement finished.  We were going to take the traditional route and have someone frame it and put in the electrical, then I would finish off the dry wall.  But then we went to the Spring 2007 Home and Garden Show in Denver, and saw something really unique.  After visiting the Owens-Corning booth, we decided to have them put in their modular system.  Lots of benefits, not the least of which is getting a tax break for installing an energy efficient home improvement.

So - all you family members who have been putting off visiting us (hint, hint):  This addition will give us a completely private area suitable as a large guest room, complete with TV, computer (with Internet), bath area, and foosball table.  Get your vacation plans made, and come spend some time in Fort Collins!

Be sure to check back daily starting April 17, 2007 to see the daily progress.

Before:

The bare area of the basement that is not yet finished, plus taking up the marble floor in the section that is finished.  This area will be carpeted to match the new area that is being finished..

Day 1 - April 17, 2007:

Mainly working on the wall framing around the perimeter, and putting in the walls that separate the craft room from the furnace room and family room.  The small opening in the second picture from the left on the top row is the closet for the craft room.

Day 4 - April 23, 2007:

The door frame for the entry way into the new section is almost done.  The ceiling ports for the ventilation are installed.  The project is on a short delay while te installers go to finish another project.  We knew this delay was coming - they started our project early with the understanding that they would have to go finish the other job, ten come back to ours.  No new construction happened happened the rest of the week except for the repairs that I made to the bathroom downstairs and taking out the remainder of the marble floor,

Day 5 - May 4, 2007:

Construction resumes.  The insulation is installed and the bedroom door is mounted.  In the mean time, I took apart the bathroom in the basement so that we could remove all of the marble flooring and paint the walls.  Some repairs had to be done to the drywall above the bath tub because of some plumbing that was recently replaced as well.  The bath room is now ready for the carpet to go in.

Day 6 - May 7, 2007:

The rough inspection is completed, and the walls start to go up as well as the ceiling being filled in.  The picture of one of the windows without the casing gives an idea how thick the insulation is on the outer walls.

Day 8 - May 9, 2007:

Walls are completed, and most of the baseboards and trim are done.  Only remaining items are the entry doors and the electrical.  As soon as the electrical is completed, the one remaining wall can be completed and the rest of the ceiling tiles installed.  Added note:  The walls and ceiling tiles were completed on the next work day, but there has been an ongoing fiasco with the doors, that as we will soon experience, will take over a month to fix.

Day 9 - May 10, 2007:

The construction in mainly completed.  I just need to finish the dry wall and finish of the outer area.  The carpet has been scheduled and we are waiting for the carpet to be installed.

Day 10 - May 30, 2007:

The carpet finally went in today.

After - The Finished Product:

It's completed!  The basement doors to fit right, and we can now call the project complete.  The carpet is all done, the doors are in, the trim is completed, and the bathroom is completed.  The family room in the basement will double as a private guest area for any visitors.  You will have a private sleeping area (the sofa is a futon bed) complete with television, Internet access and full bathroom.  Cool in the summer and warm in the winter
